Netarhat Travel Guide

When we are alone in a solitary place, we can get a chance to understand ourselves best. Not only that, we become interested in our surroundings and have the opportunity to observe them closely. This is how I felt when I was sitting at the verandah of a Dak bungalow in the forest of Netarhat and observing the forest.
Netarhat, a piece of secluded paradise in the hills of Jharkhand, currently known as the ‘Queen of Chhota Nagpur’. This contemporary favorite destination of Bengali travelers was once an ideal destination of the Britishers in colonial India. Currently, it is a great option for any travel-loving person to spend their weekend.

How to go

Mustard field on the way to Netarhat
By Train: you can reach Ranchi from any major station in India.
By Plane: Birsa Munda Airport is the main airport in Ranchi where you can come from any airport in India.
After reaching Ranchi you have to go further by Bus or Car.
By Car: Lots of rental cars are waiting outside Ranchi station. You can hire them or rent a car in advance from an online car rental website. Round trips take about 5,000 to 6,000 rupees.
Bus fare will be between 150-200.

Where to Stay

Netarhat has several beautiful hotels and bungalows. Many hotels also provide overnight accommodation in tents.
We were at the Dak Bungalow. Booking here is done long in advance so keep that in mind before making a plan.

What to See

Magnolia Sunset Point

Magnolia Sunset Point

Arrived at noon at Palamu Dak bungalow, had lunch there, and straight went to Magnolia Sunset-point. Long ago, a young British woman named Magnolia jumped into the abyss from here in the pain of unfulfilled love for a local peasant. Since then, the name of this place became Magnolia Point. Today this place is famous for its natural beauty.
At the end of the day, spreading a crimson glow across the horizon when the sun sets down behind in the jungle, captivates the minds of all travelers.

starry night observation

For the next thing, you don't need to go to any special place. If we are in the city, we usually do not get a chance to enjoy the starry night sky. You can get that opportunity easily in this secluded forest area. During the evening, with a cup of hot coffee, we sat on the verandah of the Dak bungalow and enjoyed the cosmic beauty for a long time.

Sunrise Point

Just before sunrise we rushed to Sunrise Point near the bungalow. There we witnessed a wonderful moment, in front of our eyes we saw how the dark gray horizon was slowly turning pink and finally, the red rim of the sun came out of the horizon. Everyone was amazed and enjoyed the moment.
Before Sunrise

Upper Ghaghri Waterfall

Then after completing our breakfast, we went out to Upper Ghaghri Waterfalls. Badka-dam fell first on the way to the destination, the reflection of the dense blue sky turned the water of the crystal clear dam into the deep blue.
Upper Ghaghri falls
This waterfall can be found by crossing the dense green valley and reaching the top of the hill. Sitting in the heart of the quiet mountain forest, the sweet sound of this waterfall will give peace of mind.

Lower Ghaghri Falls
From there we went straight to the lower Ghaghri waterfall. The trees on both sides of the fountain surround it in such a way that the sun's rays can almost never reach the ground.

Koyel River
One of the attractions of Netarhat is that the Koel River, flows about 10 km below the viewpoint, originating from the local village of Tutua Pani. The purple glow of the sunrise or the orange horizon of the sunset moment, the clear blue sky, or the moonlit night's reflection in the river will create a unique scene that will also force you to capture the moments on camera as well as keep this place in your heart for a lifetime.

What to Eat

One of the most important parts of traveling is food. Bengali and Bihari influence can be seen in the food here. If you visit Jharkhand, must try Dhuska or Litti chokha once. But I haven't forgotten the taste of Rooti and Desi chicken Curry for dinner while staying at Dak Bungalow.

Best Time to Go

Netarhat is beautiful and enjoyable anytime except in summer. During the monsoon, the sound of the rain breaks the silence of the forest of Shawl, Teak, Mahua forest and gives an unearthly feeling that is impossible to describe in words. But for those who want to skip this time, and walk around in the cool foggy forest, I would say November to February is the best time.
