Farm Tomita - Most beautiful picture perfect Countryside Farm of Japan

Whenever I got a scenic calendar during my childhood days, I loved to imagine myself in those beautiful places. I don't know how many times I have seen a picture of a large field covered with purple flowers in a mountain village of Japan later I came to know the name of that picturesque place is Hokkaido. A place which is famous for its large farms, where a variety of vegetables and flowers are grown throughout the summer.

Hokkaido has a relatively comfortable summer when Japan's main island Honshu endures the heat of summer. Although Hokkaido is covered in snow for most of the year, but throughout the spring and summer, the mountain slopes are covered with flowers. And in summer, lavender flowers are a special attraction among other flowers. To see this lavender flower in large farmlands millions of people from Japan and foreign countries come here every year. Today we will talk about Hokkaido's most popular lavender farm, "Farm Tomita".

Farm Tomita
This famous farm of Furano city is especially known for its lavender cultivation. However, Hokkaido's lavender cultivation is not new. It is said that from 1897 Tokuma Tomita started plowing the wilderness of the Nakafurano area. Later, lavender was cultivated here from 1956 for essence and gradually the place started to become very popular among tourists and today it is a world-famous travel destination.

SO, what is the right time to visit Farm Tomita?

During the summertime, the various countryside of Hokkaido is filled with the colors of summer flowers, the surroundings look so beautiful that you can't ignore them! The farm is open from early May to early October and a variety of flowers are available during this whole time. Lavender flowers, however, begin to bloom from late June to mid-August. We visited Farm Tomita in mid-July.

What you should not miss in Farm Tomita!

Tomita is a huge farm area, where a variety of flowers are grown together in the summer. Although the most popular flower here is lavender, yet if you return after watching only that much, many things will remain unseen!

I came up with a plan on how to see the most beautiful places of Farm Tomato in one day.

We started from Hanabito Farm, which begins just after crossing the parking area. From spring to autumn, various beautiful and ornamental colorful flowers welcome the visitors.

Right next to it is Sakiwai Field which is also called the "happiness field". Four types of lavender are cultivated here which produce different shades of purple on the same land.
Sakiwai Field
Next to it is the Autumn and Spring Field where colorful flowers bloom from mid-May to mid-October. After covering the whole place, if you go upwards, you will see Traditional Lavender Field. And it is one of the oldest lavender fields in Japan, where the farm Tomita took the first step of lavender cultivation. The lavender fields in Furano became known nationwide after a picture was printed here on a photo calendar of the Japan Railway.
Traditional Lavender Field
It looks as if a purple carpet of lavender has been spread over the slope. Walking along the slopes, this lavender flower farm with its timeless rural landscapes and the Tokachi Mountains creates a spectacular view.

Lavender Forest Field is right next to it. Surrounded by lush green forests, this lavender field looks incredibly beautiful in the sunlight.

After enjoying the beauty of this field, we climbed the stairs a little further up where we find Hilltop field. There is no lavender but instead, there are lots of red, pink, and white poppies on the one side and green crops on one side. Scattered in a tranquil mountain forest, this profoundly beautiful sight soothes the mind very much.

A little further on, you will reach another forest field where you will find again a huge field of lavender as well as a variety of colorful flowers side by side. Irodori Field, one of the most popular places on farm Tomita, can be seen from here. We slowly moved on there.

Irodori means color. It is a field of seven-colored flowers. Flowers of seven colors that embellish the rolling hill are purple-colored lavender, pink catchflies, beautiful white baby's breath, red poppies, and orange California poppies. This beautiful rainbow field is one of the most popular Insta spots for sure!

In addition to these, the newly opened firm called Lavender East is currently the largest lavender farm in Japan. This field is so large that it is very difficult to walk all over the place, and that is why 'Lavender Buses' operate inside so that you can enjoy the panoramic view of the lavender field comfortably.

In addition to these, if you have time, you must visit Distillery Workshop, Perfume Workshop, and Dried Flower House. Here is the only distillery in Japan that is used to extract the essential oil of lavender. Visitors can also see that how the distillery extracts amber-colored oil from purple lavender or in the perfume workshop, you can see how to make perfume from lavender and more interesting information can be learned from these.

If you go to the farm Tomita, of course, do not forget to eat lavender-flavored ice cream.

And you can have cheap lunch in the cafes here which are very tasty and good! and one more thing we ate lavender tea there after lunch which is so much fun and refreshing. But unfortunately, I forgot to take picture of that.

 How to go

By Train

First, take the Lilac-Kamui Express from Sapporo Station to reach Asahikawa Station. From there take the Furano Line train to Nakafurano Station, a 25-minute walk from there.

Sapporo Sta. to Asahikawa Sta. to Nakafurano Sta. costs 5,470 yen/one way.

However, sometime during the summer, the special Furano-Biei Norokko-go train runs on the Furano line which stops at Lavender Farm station, which is very close to Farm Tomita. The farm is 6-7 minutes away from there.

In this case, I would say that all foreigners who are thinking of traveling to Hokkaido by Train must use either the Regional Rail Pass or the Japan Rail Pass, which is cheaper and much more useful as it is possible to travel all over Japan via the Japan Rail Pass.

To Buy Japan Rail Pass: Japan Rail Pass

And those who just want to visit Hokkaido can get a good tour by using Hokkaido Rail Pass under Regional Pass at a very low cost.

To Buy Regional Pass: Regional Pass (Hokkaido Pass)

By Bus

In this case, also Nakafurano bus stop is the nearest and to get here the Furano lavender bus comes to Asahikawa Station via Asahikawa Airport.

JR Asahikawa Sta. to Nakafurano takes 1 hr. 25 min. (780 yen/one way)
