Horikiri Iris Garden
For centuries, these bright and vibrant flowers not only have won the hearts of Tokyoites but also many foreigners like us love to visit Horikiri park during this time. The painting of Horikiri Iris Garden is a significant part of Hiroshige's famous 'One Hundred Famous Views of Edo'. So that picture proves how old this place is.
6,000 iris flowers of about 200 species are now grown in this popular Japanese-style garden of the Edo period. This small park has many types of flowers all year round but is the most visited during the whole month of June.
It is said that in the early nineteenth
century, a farmer named Kodaka Izaemon planted an Iris garden in Horikiri. According
to other source, marshlands may be another reason for the natural growth of
Iris flowers here.
However, I think it is necessary to mention two more places when it comes to seeing iris flowers here.
First of all, the pathway between Horikirishōbuen station to the park is filled with beautiful Hydrangea (Ajisai) flowers. You
have to stop for a while to enjoy the beautiful view of the bunch of
colorful Hydrangea flowers on both sides of the street.
The next place is Horikiri Waterside Park (堀切水辺公園). Very few people who visit Horikiri Iris garden come to this riverside park because not many of them know that beautiful Iris flowers bloom in this Arakawa riverside park too. Even from here, one gets a great view of the Tokyo Skytree with flowers in one frame.
